This is a lesson plan I have taught in NYC public schools summer school session.

This ELA lesson was prepared as part of my training as a New York City Teaching Fellow.  The lesson was designed using 6th grade learning standards and taught to students residing in Queens.

The lesson uses the novel Dragon Wings by Laurence Yep.

Here is a link to the full lesson plan.

Below you will also find a gallery including the texts used for the lesson, worksheets used to complete the lesson and student's classwork.

The cloze worksheets for this lesson were used to review vocabulary as well as contrast differing points of view presented within the novel's opening chapter.

As a final "exit ticket" activity for the lesson students wrote their own personal point of view on a post-it note.  Each student shared their point of view with the class and then as a class we decided if the point of view was a pro or con, students then added their point of view to a whole class T-chart on the white board.

The lesson's homework was to write a conclusion paragraph for the persuasive letter from the viewpoint of the character that had written the letter.

In this way the lesson was able to move through a number of different modalities, reading, writing, listening and speaking and helped to clarify the students' understanding of point of view.
