I am currently teaching math to English Language Learners (ELLs) at a middle school in The Bronx. I teach learners from grades six through eight. My students are mostly from two populations: intermediate and advanced level ELLs and newcomers/SIFE students.

In our first unit we explored

ratio concepts. Below you can browse the galleries of students' journal entries to see their records of some of the lessons.

As you can see below we drew illustrations of food and monsters to demonstrate the learners' number knowledge and language fluency.

In later units we learned how to convert between ratios' fractional forms and decimal forms  to create visual representations using a protractor.

Students used protractors

to create accurately proportioned

circle graphs of our

class's population demographics.

In a prior lesson to the above, students worked in mixed ability pairs to create a visual display of positive and negative values on a coordinate plane. Students were challenged to draw an object in all four of the grids quadrants.

These learners are using concepts of absolute value to draw a rainbow over the ocean with fish below the sea.

Click the underlined text to see students' journal entries about what it means to live under the sea.

While my students learn cooperatively and explore grade level appropriate, standard aligned math concepts, they also work in groups to practice English language skills using academic language. The integration of academic language is essential for ELL students' success and achievement.

These images are from my students' notebooks and journals.  As part of our study of ratio relationships and equivalent ratios they drew pictures of their personal "Hamburger Heaven".  The assignment was to draw their favorite hamburger and then describe the ingredients and toppings using part-to-part and part-to-whole ratios.

This assignment was another ratio relationships task. The students were asked to create ratios to describe the body parts of a monster.  For homework the students had to draw an entire monster family, including parents and children, that all had the same ratio relationship.
